According to some historians it was the Twenthieth century that launched the modern concept of International Relations. The Great War (1914 - 1918) escalated social change in Britain (and elsewhere in Europe) on an unprecedented scale.
The aristocracy were challenged in their hereditary rights of policymaking, lawmaking, leadership and land ownership.
Look at some of the clips in this series and the preceding series of Downton Abbey. This traces an
aristocratic family throughout these perilous times and suggests some reasons for social change which had a profound effect on the relationships between nations.
